Individual & Family Health Insurance in Iowa

Marketplace and off-Marketplace plans for Iowans who don't get coverage through an employer.

If you're self-employed, between jobs, retired before 65, or your employer doesn't offer coverage, you buy your own plan. Iowa uses HealthCare.gov as its Marketplace, and that's where premium tax credits are applied. We're registered to help you there, and we can also show you plans sold outside the Marketplace when they fit better.

What we do for you

  • Estimate your premium tax credit from your expected 2027 household income, and explain what happens if your income changes mid-year.
  • Pull every plan offered in your county and compare deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, and whether your doctors and prescriptions are covered.
  • Walk through the application with you, document your consent, and submit it only after you've reviewed it.
  • Stay your agent of record. When a bill or a denial doesn't make sense, you call us.

Special enrollment

Outside of Open Enrollment you can still enroll within 60 days of a qualifying life event: losing other coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or a few others. If something just changed, call us before the window closes.

Short-term and off-Marketplace plans

These can be cheaper, but they don't have to cover pre-existing conditions or the ten essential health benefits, and no tax credit applies. We'll tell you plainly when one is a reasonable fit and when it isn't.

2027 changes for individual and family coverage

  • The enhanced premium tax credits from 2021 expired on December 31, 2025. The subsidy cutoff at 400% of the federal poverty level is back for 2026 and 2027 (KFF).
  • Average after-subsidy premium payments rose 58% in 2026, to $178 a month (KFF).
  • Open Enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for January 1 coverage (HealthCare.gov).
  • Medica is leaving Iowa's individual market for 2027. If that's your plan, you'll be assigned a replacement at renewal unless you choose one (Iowa Insurance Division filings).
  • Starting plan year 2027, the year-round special enrollment period for households under 150% of the poverty level ends (H.R. 1, 2025).
